Creating My First Podcast

Updated: Sep 28, 2021

I've always preferred video over just voice, but life tends to shows you what you should aim your energy towards and what might accommodate the most to your current time and needs.

Where to start

It all begins from an actual place of passion. Mine: interviewing (famous) people, so we're going to use this as an example throughout the post.

Factors to keep in mind

When creating your podcast remember the following points:

  • NICHE: What kind of people would listen to your podcast?

  • FORMAT: Are you doing an interview, vox pop, monologue, conversation, tips segment, story, class, meditation ...? How long is it going to last? Will it have an intro, a breather and an outro?

  • FORM: Who are you, and what makes you irreplaceable? Think about it wisely, it might be the way you talk, the way you ask questions, the quality of your story or facts, the topics you touch or even the focus you give to a topic (among many others).

  • WHY: This is really the first questions you should be asking yourself, but it really is the result of all of the above points. Why are you making a podcast? It could be that you have something to say, you feel like you can help people, you found a whole in the industry and you know you could give voice to those thoughts that haven't been discussed. Only you know, but make it important.

Once you have the gist of what you want, which might be the whole reason why you are already here, you begin the Creation Process.

Creation Process

THE NAME - podcast names shouldn't have people wondering what the podcast is about. They should be blunt, direct and it will definitely be easier if they don't have any made-up words, just to make the Search easier.

*Think of how YOU look for things on Google, and make it yours.

EDITING - Don't spend money on Adobe Audition, download Audacity for free and get yourself acquainted with sound waves before you go deeper into editing (if you are new to this of course). I have to say, I worked at a radio station for 6 years and Audacity is a great tool for beginners and pros that we used on a daily. Some benefits are that you can add multiple Tracks and easily mix them, add music, record, remove unwanted lip sounds between words, add effects, among many manyyy other things.

INTRO AND OUTRO - This is so important! Either in radio or on a podcast, as this is mostly sound (of course if you are doing a sound podcast), giving the listener some knowledge of what to expect is the least you can do because pressing "play" without an intro, is like going into a dark room not knowing what to expect.

  • INTRO: Keep it short and clear, answer the 5 W's if you can (Who, What, Where, When, Why)

  • Who: your name

  • What: the podcast's name

  • Where: the platforms you are in

  • When: the periodicity of your new episodes (example: every Tuesday)

  • * If you're new, I recommend you don't promise launch days until you feel comfortable.

  • Why: only you know this one, as I mentioned before ;)

Here's an example:

[MUSIC]

This is <<insert podcast's name>> with <<insert your name>>. A show about <<WHY: dreamers who, with their thoughts and determination, managed to open paths in the art and culture industry to change minds and show that you can do what you love and make a living from it>>. Only on <<insert platforms here>>. Every <<insert periodicity>>.
